Fairfield, Ala., native S. Jonathan Bass holds a BS, MA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and his PhD from the University of Tennessee. He joined Samford's faculty in 1997. His book, Blessed are the Peacemakers: Martin Luther King, Jr., Eight white religious leaders and the "Letter from Birmingham Jail, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.
New information about Samford University’s beginnings is revealed in his newest book From Every Stormy Wind That Blows: The Idea of Howard College and the Origins of Samford University, which debuted on Feb. 21, 2024. The publication looks at the founding and development of Howard College, which in 1965 changed its name to Samford. Samford President Emeritus Andrew Westmoreland commissioned Bass to write the scholarly history book.
